Matte or Glossy Wall Vinyl Decals?

Wall vinyl decals and wall quotes are perfect for any wall decor because of their relatively inexpensive prices, their versatility and the ease with which they can be applied to and removed from flat surfaces.

When choosing amongst vinyl wall decal stickers for a room in your home, you will need to select between a matte or glossy finish.

The Difference Between Matte and Glossy

The best way to get an idea of the difference between these two types of wall decals, take a look at the matte and glossy finishes on photographs. It is a similar effect on vinyl decals.

Quite plainly, the main distinction is that glossy vinyl reflects the light more strongly and the matte vinyl’s textured finish does not shine as much when put under light. Usually, it is the matte finish most people prefer because it produces a hand painted look that appears more natural.

It comes down to what is already present in the room and what you want the vinyl wall decal to be contributing to the room decor.

If using wall quotes, the quote itself should also be taken into consideration when choosing between matte and glossy. A flashy quote may benefit more strongly from a glossy look while a more modest and introspective wall quote could better be served by a matte treatment.

Practical Considerations When Choosing Wall Vinyl Decals

On top of aesthetic considerations there are also several practical variables to take into account.

Matte vinyl typically has a kind of adhesive quality that will make them easily removable from walls. This is quite convenient if you plan on installing vinyl wall decals for long periods but not necessarily for ever. They will come off nicely should you decide to remove the matte vinyl decals later on. People living in apartments will find this particularly helpful.

On the other hand, it could be more difficult to apply matte decals to any textured walls that are not perfectly flat. Unless you have an entirely smooth surface, matte vinyl is probably not the way to go. For similar reasons, if they are applied outdoors, these kinds of decals may not retain their adhesive power over the long run.

Glossy vinyl decals have more adhesive power than matte and they will usually bond themselves to slightly textured walls more efficiently.

However, it will be relatively more difficult to remove the decals when they have spent some considerable amounts of time on any wall. It will depend on the paint quality of the wall whether the surface of it will be damaged or not when the decal is taken off. This is not to say that glossy decals may not be transferred to a different position once applied on a surface but they are less ideal than matte vinyl decals in these circumstances.

I have vinyl wall art on oil base paint and they are coming off. To avoid having to take them off and starting over. Can I paint a clear coat over the top to make it stay? Thank you for your help! :)
