A question that gets asked often about vinyl wall quotes is whether they will hold well to textured surfaces or not. Of course, the answer will depend on the quality of the vinyl and how much texture the surface actually has. In general, however, the least texture a wall has the better it will be for the decal.
Light texture is usually not a problem unless you’re dealing with a very cheap vinyl wall quote. Plastered brick walls covered with paint and flat stucco, for example, should work well and will most likely look fine as you work the vinyl into the textures. Likewise, applying decals on other slightly textured surfaces such as a canvas should also produce satisfying results.
Avoid putting vinyl wall quotes here…
Conversely, walls that have sand bag finishes along with suede style textures, cinder blocks, unpainted bricks, porous aluminum, raw concrete, stones, untreated wood, textured wallpaper and some stucco surfaces will either be too porous or bumpy for most wall decals quotes to stick on properly.
You may take a go at it but there are chances the end result will be anything but pleasing in such cases. If you decide to go ahead it will be important to remove the air bubbles that will form during the application process. Proceed slowly to avoid tearing or stretching the decal.
Take note that the adhesive on matte vinyl is sometimes less sticky than on its glossy counterpart. As such, glossy wall quote decals may better hold themselves to textured surfaces than matte vinyl. Thinner decals may produce great effects but if the adhesive is water-based and the vinyl somewhat fragile, there are risks they will tear off as you work them over the textures.
Make Tests With Samples
Since there are so many different varieties of vinyl lettering and decals available, inquire with shops about the types of surfaces their wall quotes will work well on. The best shops will gladly provide you with free samples so you can test things out before buying. Try with both matte and glossy vinyl and see which one works best.
| Tip : Should your vinyl wall quotes manage to look good on your textured wall but the bond be too weak to hold them well over the long run, try using a sprayed-on transparent adhesive to finish the job nicely. |
| Tip : Vinyl decals can create stunning effects when placed on canvases. Get a few blank canvases and thin decals (with water-based adhesive) that will transfer well on them to create a sophisticated ambience. |
